Tom and Chee! Yippee! or not….
Wife- What do you want to do for dinner?
Me- I don’t care
Wife- Let’s try Tom and Chee?
Along with what I can assume is 90% of America, that’s how we decide where to eat at. We knew the restaurant from shark tank and also learned it open a few weeks ago on cedar bluff road. Honing in on my inner kid isn’t hard at all. I’m always ready for a gooey grilled cheese. BRING IT ON!Our arrival. The place is pretty neat. They definitely play on the fun aspect. Lot’s of bright colors and what seemed to be alot of employees. There is a line that wraps around the wall and directs you to the cashier. Along the way they have paper menus for you to look at in case you cannot see the large print menu above the cashier. We went on a Saturday night at approximately 8:30. While there were only two ladies in front of us, most tables were seated. There were three empty ones, however they were all dirty and we noticed customers wiping off their own tables. Service
We decided on our order and it was our turn in front of the friendly cashier. The cashier looked at us, turned around to talk to some employees or check something, and looked back at us. I looked at her. I then looked at my wife, and she looks back at me. I do expect the customary “Hello”, “Are you ready to order”, “Do you have any questions?”, maybe even “Hey crap-head, watcha want?”. Instead I got a stare. My wife knew what I was doing (Holding out for any acknowledgement) so she went ahead and ordered and so did I. I guess I lost the stare off. We placed our orders, by the way, not a word from the cashier, maybe a “Thanks” next time would be good, filled our drinks, and proceeded to an empty table. They were all still dirty so I wiped ours off with a napkin and sat in puddle of spilt beverage from the previous customers. Our food arrived pretty quickly. Faster than expected actually. It was delivered by guess what, a very unfriendly employee. This is crazy. My wife asked if we were in the twilight zone.FoodI ordered “The Tom-Chee”, it’s their name sake after all, got to be great. The price is on mark, but not for this grilled cheese. Inside of it were two very thin slices of cheese. Not even melted. The sandwich was in great need of a longer grill time. It was barely warm inside. When I get a grilled cheese I expect to see some melted cheese on that thing. I also ordered the Classic Tomato soup. It’s in their name so must be good. It was fine. Only problem, it was cold. I would bet less than 90 degrees. Pretty disappointing for sure. My wife ordered the BLT and Cheese. More of the same news here. Cheese not melted, sandwich cold, not enough cheese, but the best part was the bacon bits were so cold, it had solidified grease mixed in. Just not good at all. She did also order the side of Mac&Chee, of which we were over charged for. By itself it costs $3, but it says add to any sandwich for just $2. I’d say after my stare down with the cashier she wanted to really stick it to me. The mac and chee itself was hot, cheesy, and overall pretty good. Lastly we tried the classic donut. Man was this thing sweet. It was the best part of the meal, properly executed and pretty tasty. At the end of our meal we took our trays to the oddly small trash area tucked away in the corner. The trash was full, and there really wasn’t enough space to put ours. We did the best we could.
Overall, Tom and chee was a pretty big disappointment. The donut was good, but sort of a one time thing for me, the sandwiches were at the right price point, but not with only two slices of cold, un melted cheese, the soup was cold, the service very unfriendly, and you clean your own table. We won’t be back.
Cold food, poor value, HORRIBLE SERVICE
